For those who don’t want to read my Introduction (mostly because I wrote it damn near nine years ago), please see my Essential Five criteria and guidelines below:

  • Career must reach or exceed at least 20 years. This isn’t an absolute, but if there is one, this is likely it.
  • Proven track record of commercial or critical films that have reached a wide array audiences (whether or not they’re successful isn’t my call to make).
  • I will have to be familiar with and at least seen a majority of their film catalog. This will definitely be on a case-by-case basis. Old School Hollywood was a different beast, so whether or not I’ve seen all of a specific director’s catalog may be an issue, but I will definitely have a good grasp of what the director has had to offer making a post about them.
  • A short bio will be included, some key scenes from certain films (which may or may not actually be on the Essential Five films I will list), any director trademarks, and an Honorable Mention.
